We investigated the impact of variation in densities of a guild of generalist predators on survival of young wolf spiders of the genus Schizocosa. Numbers of other spiders and centipedes were reduced by >80% in fenced 4-m2 plots in an experiment that was replicated twice in each of three forest locations. Schizocosa survival during the 1st month was low (<50%) in all three locations, but did not differ between predator-reduction and control plots. By the end of the 1st month, densities of the manipulated predators had converged in control and perturbed treatments, most likely because of reduced per capita mortality from lowered rates of intraguild predation and cannibalism in the experimental treatment. During the 2nd month of the experiment, centipedes and spiders other than Schizocosa again were removed from the experimental plots and, unlike the earlier period, numbers of intraguild predators in the predator-removal treatment remained lower than in control plots. Reducing densities of intraguild predators during the 2nd month improved survival of older juvenile Schizocosa by 75% in two of three locations on the forest floor. In addition to this evidence that intraguild predation can affect older juvenile Schizocosa, survival of Schizocosa during the last half of the experiment was negatively correlated with spatial variation in densities of gnaphosid and ctenid spiders. These two abundant families of cursorial spiders preyed on Schizocosa at a high rate in laboratory trials. Thus, variation in densities of intraguild predators did not influence the youngest Schizocosa, but did influence the survival of older juveniles, most likely due to variations in densities of other cursorial spiders. The parasitoids of arthropod pests of apple and pear in northern and central Europe and their use as biological control agents are reviewed. The review demonstrates that apple and pear pests are host to a large and varied parasitoid fauna. All important pests are known to be host of parasitoids, but many parasitoids play only a minor part in regulating populations of their host. However, many parasitoid species are important natural enemies and some effectively regulate pest populations in unsprayed and/or commercial (insecticide sprayed) apple or pear orchards either individually or as part of parasitoid guilds. Exploitation/fostering of existing populations of parasitoids has been demonstrated to be an effective or partially effective approach for natural control of several important pest species. Important examples include natural regulation of the apple sawfly by Lathrolestes ensator and Aptesis nigrocincta, of the summer fruit tortrix moth by Colpoclypeus florus and Teleutaea striata, of leaf midges by Platygaster demades, of woolly aphid by Aphelinus mali and of leaf mining moths by guilds of parasitoid species. Introduction of parasitoids is an alternative approach to the exploitation of parasitoids already present in the orchard. This approach has been little explored and its success rate has been low, mainly confined to the control of non-indigenous pests by introducing parasitoids from their native region. Mass production methods for parasitoids are difficult and costly and are likely to be economic only where long-term populations can be established. Even where low cost mass culture techniques are developed, the degree of control may not be high enough to prevent economic pest damage as demonstrated by negative results with mass release of Trichogramma egg parasites for control of tortricids in orchards. Suitability of the orchard habitat is recognized as crucial to the success of individual parasitoids. Key requirements are adequate populations of the pest(s) and/or alternative hosts, suitable shelter, overwintering sites or food sources and avoidance of harmful effects of pesticides. Many species are highly sensitive to broad-spectrum insecticides, especially in the adult life-stage. Avoiding the harmful affects of insecticides is crucial to successful exploitation. The use of insecticides needs to be avoided, either altogether or at crucial times in the parasitoids' life cycle, or less harmful alternatives need to be used. Numerous parasitoids could potentially be exploited as biological control agents but hitherto have received little attention because little is known about them and/or because they are sensitive to broad-spectrum pesticides and are thus virtually absent from commercial orchards. The aim of future studies should be to develop effective strategies for establishing equilibria between important pests and their parasitoids, with pest damage rarely exceeding the economic threshold.  相似文献

A comparative study was undertaken on the leaves of 12 Sterculia species in order to assess anatomical variations which may be useful in species identification and to evaluate their significance in the taxonomy of the genus. All species have glandular and non-glandular trichomes, anomocytic stomata, multiple and mucilaginous epidermis, mucilaginous cavities and druses in mesophyll tissues. A small amount of variation was observed in the outline of transverse sections of midribs and petioles, the presence of central vascular bundles, and the type of trichomes. Some characters, such as the vertically divided adaxial epidermis in S. macrophylla , are unique to certain species and are therefore useful in diagnostic characters, while S. coccinea and S. elongata appear to be similar in the structure of the petiole and midrib. The results, however, do not show any groupings of species and do not support the observations of others on groups derived from wood anatomy.  相似文献

It has been postulated that vacuolar compartmentation might play an important role in naturally selected cadmium tolerance in Silene vulgaris (Moench.) Garcke (Bladder campion). Additionally, a tendency of heavy metals to accumulate in the epidermis has been reported. Since these factors would affect the distribution of cadmium in leaves, we determined the distribution of cadmium in leaves of cadmium tolerant and sensitive ecotypes of Silene vulgaris at different levels of exposure and at different time intervals. Cadmium concentrations were higher in leaves of sensitive plants than in those of cadmium tolerant ones after identical exposure to cadmium for a period of 8 days. The highest cadmium concentrations were found in the lower epidermis of plants of both ecotypes. The amount of cadmium located at the lower epidermis was highest for sensitive plants, although the stomatal density was lower in the sensitive ecotype than in the tolerant one. A possible explanation for this phenomenon is the weak relationship between transpiration (water flow) and element allocation. Our results support the hypothesis that vacuolar storage of cadmium plays an important role in the mechanism of cadmium tolerance in Silene vulgaris .  相似文献

Phenolic compounds are potential antimicrobial agents in willows ( Salix spp.). However, little is known about their role in willow‐pathogen interactions. Earlier studies have shown that phenolic levels may vary depending on genotype and environmental factors (such as nutrient availability). In the present study, the combined effects of nitrogen fertilization and infection by pathogenic rust ( Melampsora sp.) on phenolics and growth in willow ( salix myrsinifolia ) clones were investigated. Cutting-propagated plants of eight willow clones were subjected to low and optimum levels of nitrogen fertilization and inoculated with rust urediniospores or mock-inoculated with water. The plants were harvested 20 days after the inoculations and the dry weight of the leaves, stems and roots determined. Phenolics were analysed from leaf material using HPLC. The willow clones differed significantly in their phenolic content, rust frequency and phytomass production. Plants under optimum nitrogen availability showed increased shoot phytomass production and reduced root production. Rust infection increased the root phytomass of willow under both fertilization treatments, but had no consistent effect on the shoot growth of the clones. Low nitrogen availability increased the phenolic levels in willow leaves, but the rust frequency did not differ significantly between plants grown at low and optimum levels of nitrogen fertilization. In several clones, rust infection increased the concentrations of individual phenolic compounds, but there were no significant correlations between phenolic concentrations and the level of rust infection. The results indicate that resistance in compatible willow‐rust interactions may not be directly governed by phenolic compounds.  相似文献

Wheat leaf growth is known to be spatially affected by salinity. The altered spatial distribution of leaf growth under saline conditions may be associated with spatial changes in tissue mineral elements. The objective of this study was to evaluate the spatial distributions of mineral elements and their net deposition rates in the elongating and mature zones of leaf 4 of the main stem of spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Lona) during its linear growth phase under saline soil conditions. Plants were grown in an illitic-chloritic silty loam with 0 and 120 mM NaCl. Three days after emergence of leaf 4, sampling was begun at 3 and 13 h into the 16-h light period. Spatial distributions of fresh weight (FW), dry weight (DW), and Na+, K+, Cl, NO 3, Ca2+, Mg2+, total P, and total N in the elongating and mature tissues were determined on a millimeter scale. The patterns of spatial distribution of Na+, Cl, K+, NO3 , and Ca2+ in the growing leaves were affected by salinity, while those of Mg2+, total P, and total N were not. Sodium, K+, Cl, Ca2+, Mg2+, and total N concentrations (mmol · kg−1 FW) were consistently higher at 120 mM NaCl than at 0 mM NaCl along the leaf axis from the leaf base, whereas NO3 concentration was lower at 120 mM NaCl. Deposition rates of all nutrients were greatest in the elongation zone. The elongation zone was the strongest sink for mineral elements in the leaf tissues. Local net deposition rates of Na+, Cl, Ca2+, and Mg2+ (mmol · kg−1 FW · h−1) in the most actively elongating zone were enhanced by 120 mM NaCl, whereas for NO3 this was depressed. The lower supply of NO 3 to growing leaves may be responsible for the inhibition of growth under saline conditions. Higher tissue concentrations of Na+ and Cl may cause ion imbalance but probably did not result in ion toxicity in the growing leaves. Potassium, Ca2+, Mg2+, total P, and total N are less plausibly responsible for the reduction in leaf growth in this study. Higher tissue K+ and Ca2+ concentrations at 120 mM NaCl are probably due to the presence of high Ca2+ in the soil of this study. Received: 13 March 1997 / Accepted: 9 June 1997  相似文献

在扫描电镜下,比较观察了冷杉属全世界36种2变种的叶角质层内表面的结构特征,根据叶角 质层内表面胞间凸缘特征的显著差异,将冷杉属植物归为4类:(1)直且发达的单凸缘;(2)双凸缘; (3)不发达的单凸缘;(4)弯曲且发达的单凸缘。并发现这四种凸缘类型在冷杉属中的分布格局与该 类植物的地理分布具有相关性。根据所观察的结果和前人的属下分类系统以及化石资料,认为北美西部是现代冷杉属植物的一个多样性中心。  相似文献
